Car Parking Levy to be introduced this Summer
The Department of Finance has confirmed that the €200 car parking levy will be introduced this summer. The report on the levy has been prepared and will be submitted to the Minister for Finance for approval. The levy was provided for by section 3 Finance (No. 2) Act 2008 which inserted a new Part 18B to the Taxes Consolidation Act (TCA) 1997.
As readers will be aware, the levy was first announced by the Minister in his budget speech in October 2008 and was subject to Commencement Order.
Given that the notion of such a levy was originally mooted by the then Minister for Finance, Charlie McCreevy over ten years ago, this must be one of the slowest taxes ever to emerge.
