HMRC Need Your Help

The recent consultations on HMRC/Agent Relationship have given impetus to HMRC providing online self-service facilities for tax practices. What would you like to be able to do online?

HMRC advise us that they will look in more detail at the practical steps needed to design online self-service facilities for practices who register with them for tax management services. To help with that development work HMRC would like to recruit a pool of up to 100 firms, who represent the full range of the industry in every geographical region of the UK and Northern Ireland. They are looking for agent firms of different sizes, specialisms and maturity.

It is envisaged that HMRC will work with agents over a 3-4 month period including occasional visits to agents’ offices and through workshops. Overall, the work is aimed at helping HMRC to understand how future services should be configured through testing ideas and designs.

Groups of agents will be drawn from the volunteer pool to take part in different elements and stages of this work. HMRC will match the design need to the time that individual agents can spare to support this work and will agree the time commitment with them in advance. Work is planned to commence early March.

If you or your practice would be interested in offering your assistance please contact HMRC at agent.consultation@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk. HMRC will send a short questionnaire to volunteers to gather sufficient information to identify a representative pool of agents for this phase of the work.

There is no need to contact HMRC again if you have already offered to support this phase of the work through your response to the consultation. HMRC will be contacting you separately to confirm your support and gather the necessary information.

This initiative follows the consultation “Establishing the future relationship between the tax agent community and HM Revenue & Customs” which was undertaken summer 2011 and to which Chartered Accountants Ireland submitted a response in September last. The Institute is in favour of better online services being provided to suitably qualified professionals such as Chartered Accountants.
