This month’s UK tax tidbits
Developments of interest are outlined.
- The criteria for filing a self-assessment tax return have been updated
- The Land Transaction Tax (LTT) and Anti-avoidance of Devolved Taxes (Wales) Act has received Royal Assent. The rates and thresholds for LTT will be published by October 2017
- The list of upcoming tax tribunal appeal hearings, including details of previous cases has been updated
- Use the Inheritance Tax grossing up calculator to work out an estate value when legacies in a will are free of tax and other assets are tax exempt
- HMRC has updated the list (List 3) of professional bodies and learned societies, approved by HMRC for the purpose of section 344 ITEPA 2003 (allowable deductions from earnings for fees and subscriptions paid to professional bodies/learned societies). The list includes all bodies approved as at 15 May
- Use the online form service to claim tax relief or any tax refund you’re owed if you’ve left or are about to leave the UK
- Non-resident landlords should use the online service or postal form to apply to rental income paid without UK tax being deducted
- HMRC have published the Orchestra Tax Relief manual providing guidance on the operation of the new relief for production companies staging orchestral concerts
- Various documents relevant to inheritance tax have been published: Apply for an Inheritance Tax reference after a chargeable event (IHT122), Claim to transfer any unused residence nil rate band (IHT436) and Claim the residence nil rate band (IHT435)
- The May 2017 Scottish rate of Income Tax newsletter has been published – this contains updates and guidance on pension schemes
- Various documents relevant to the proposed new legislation on corporate interest restriction are available: Corporate Interest Restriction draft guidance, Draft legislation: the Corporate Interest Restriction (Financial Statements: Group Mismatches) Regulations 2017 and Draft legislation: the Corporate Interest Restriction (Consequential Amendments) Regulations 2017
- The most recent VAT publications are as follows: VAT Notes 2017 Issue 1, Notice 340: importing scientific instruments free of duty and VAT and VAT: application for registration (VAT1)
- HMRC have updated the following toolkits: HMRC company losses toolkit, HMRC directors’ loan accounts toolkit and the HMRC property rental toolkit
