The European Commission has asked Italy under state aid rules for information regarding preferential tax regimes for cooperatives operating in the retail, distribution and banking sectors in Italy.

The Commission's concern relates to the fact that cooperatives may also make profits from dealings with non-members and behave in the market in the same way as profit-making companies. The Commission considers that under these circumstances, a preferential treatment for cooperatives may entail state aid.
