Email and Online Scams
Revenue issued further warnings about fraudulent emails. The general principle that, if something is too good to be true, then it is not true, always applies. Fraudulent emails, ostensibly from Revenue, are telling recipients that they are eligible to receive a tax refund of €320.50 as a lever for obtaining personal information such as date of birth and bank account details.
The fraudulent emails, known as ‘phishing’, also contain a link to a reproduction of the Revenue website which perhaps may convince recipients of its validity. Anyone who has provided bank details in response to such emails should contact should contact their bank immediately.
The Revenue Commissioners advise that they never send emails which require customers to send personal information via email or pop-up windows.
