Ulster Society Members Meet with HMRC

Institute President Mr John Hannaway and tax committee member Ms Lesley Austin, Cavanagh Kelly with HMRC speakers at the Derry event

Over 3 evenings in April, just over 120 Ulster Society members met with Senior HMRC personnel at a number of sessions across Northern Ireland. The bespoke seminars in Newry, Derry and Belfast were jointly hosted by Chartered Accountants Ulster Society and the Institute's Northern Ireland Tax Committee (NITC) and chaired by a team of Chartered Accountants led by the immediate past President, Mr John Hannaway.

The events were developed by HMRC, based on specific agenda items requested by the NITC, and were intended to provide members with a forum for listening to what's happening in HMRC and how our members can best interact with the Department to get the most out of that relationship for the benefit of their practice and, ultimately, their clients.

Speakers included senior HMRC personnel from a range of departments and disciplines such as Business & Customer Strategy, Local Compliance and the High Net Worth Unit. Members had the opportunity to ask questions and those in attendance could directly interact with the HMRC speakers and representatives to discuss the seminar content and any other relevant queries.

Members also learned about how HMRC is now structured in Northern Ireland and heard about the proposed Single Compliance Process (SCP) which HMRC have just commenced evaluating after completion of the trial phase in March. The SCP was covered recently by Chartered Accountants Tax News at http://www.charteredaccountants.ie/General/News-and-Events/News1/2012/February/Tax-agents-and-advisers-briefing---single-compliance-process/

The seminars are a milestone in the ongoing work of the NITC as it seeks to improve the environment for Chartered Accountants practising tax in Northern Ireland. To that end we need you, as our members, to let us know how things are when you interact with HMRC, the good and the bad.
