Revenue Chairman's Statement to The Public Accounts Committee

The annual review of Revenue performance within the framework of the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General featured in the business of the Public Accounts Committee. In her opening address to the PAC, the Chairman noted particular pressure points for Revenue and for taxpayers generally.

Ms Feehily noted the areas of Excise, tax avoidance and tax planning as “a constant challenge” as risk areas.

“Also situations where individuals or businesses have the capacity to operate with cash need particular attention because it is recognised that in times of recession people look for ways to replace lost income or profits. Last year we focussed a lot of our audit activity on a wide variety of such businesses ranging from the entertainment sectors to white collar professionals and we will continue this focus in 2013... When tax non-compliance is serious and there is sufficient evidence to support a criminal court case the matter may be pursued by Revenue's dedicated Investigation and Prosecutions Division.”

The Chairman also referenced issues arising on the collection and enforcement of Local Property Tax.
