Local Property Tax (LPT) Update
Recently published LPT figures from Revenue tell us that 2014 LPT returns have been received for 1.83 million properties to date giving a compliance rate of just under 94%. So far, €310 million has been collected for 2014; this includes over €20 million in Household Charge payments. Dublin City properties account for just over €60.4 million collected in LPT for 2014 while €1.7 million was collected from properties in Longford.
According to the overall figures published by Revenue, the 2014 LPT returns for 1.83 million properties includes payment instructions rolled over from 2013 for 330,000 properties, 5,000 properties on which mandatory deduction at source has been applied, 3,000 work items currently being processed, 15,000 Local Authority owned properties and new instructions for 1.27m properties for 2014.
The Local Authority analysis shows that the four Dublin councils – Dublin City, Fingal, Dunlaoghaire-Rathdown and South Dublin, account for €148.1 million collected in LPT for 2014. A total of €485 million LPT payments were declared for 2014, with €7 million of this deferred.
There are around 34,100 claims for exemption from LPT in 2014, 5,200 of these from first-time buyers and 4,900 due to ghost estates. Requests for deferrals of LPT were made in respect of 18,600 properties, the majority (16,800) claimed under the income threshold.
Over half of homeowners paid their 2014 LPT by Single Debit Authority or Direct Debit. Only 5.8% opted to make payment by credit card.
Revenue LPT compliance activity to date includes the issuing of 252,000 compliance letters to homeowners, 40,000 and 46,000 mandatory deduction from wages/salary for 2013 and 2014 respectively, the refusal of 9,591 tax clearance requests and 12,253 income tax surcharges applied.
