Updated on accelerated payment notices and avoidance
In a press release dealing with accelerated payment notices (APNs), HMRC advise that they are now issuing over 3,000 APNs a month, and have issued over 41,000 notices since these were introduced. By the end of 2016, HMRC expects to have completed issuing notices.
By way of reminder, the APNs legislation means that those who have used a tax avoidance scheme may have to make a payment of the amount that relates to their use of the scheme, before the final amount has been agreed or determined. Such a payment is known as an accelerated payment.
This Institute is in regular contact with HMRC’s High Net Worth Unit to discuss matters such as APNs.
