Tax Policies in the European Union 2016 Survey

The European Commission has published “Tax Policies in the EU survey”. This survey examines how Member States’ tax systems promote investment and employment, along with initiatives to reduce tax fraud, evasion and avoidance, and how tax systems address income inequalities and ensure social fairness.

The survey identified that since 2010, the total tax revenue as a percentage of GDP has increased in most Member States. However, the level of total taxation differs between Member States. In 2014, the tax-to-GDP ratio varied between 49.9% in Denmark and 27.7% in Lithuania and Romania. Ireland’s tax-to-GDP ratio was just under 30% and the UK’s tax-to-GDP was approximately 33%.
