Revenue 2017 Annual Report

Some €2.8 billion more in taxes, duties and levies was collected in 2017 by Revenue compared to the 2016 tax year bringing the total tax receipts to over €50 billion. The three main taxes, income tax, VAT and corporation tax were all increased and there were high voluntary compliance rates of over 90 percent across all taxes in 2017.

Other points of interest from the 2017 Annual Report are:

  • Net receipts were €50.76 billion, up 5.8 percent on 2016 receipts.
  • Revenue collected €212.4 million in over 37,000 debt enforcement cases.
  • Just over 2.5 million phone calls to the Revenue’s 1890 telephone service were answered.
  • The yield from audit and compliance interventions was €491.9 million (€196.3 million from audits and €295.6 million from non-audit interventions) with a further €83.8 million from Foreign Income and Assets Disclosures initiative.
  • There were 289 settlements published in Iris Oifigiúil totalling €53.13 million.
  • Non-filing of returns resulted in 732 penalties amounting to €2.92 million. Of these, 607 cases were non-filing of P35 returns yielding €2.42 million and the balance of €500,000 in VAT cases (125).

The 2017 Annual Report also provides details on the Revenue organisation structure, governance and financial management. The Revenue Board paid tribute to the contribution of recently retired Commissioner, Mr Liam Irwin.
