Commission to increase funding to the customs programme by some €400m

The European Commission published plans to increase spending to €950 million from 2021 to 2027 on a new Customs Programme designed to boost cooperation between tax and customs authorities. This represents an increase from €523 million spent in the period 2014–2020. If approved the funds will be used among other things to increase information and data exchange between national customs administrations and help the EU better respond to security threats.

The Commission also plan to spend €270 million on the administration of its measures to counter tax fraud, tax evasion and tax avoidance. The money will be spent on:

  • Developing connected IT systems, which the Commission says each Member State would otherwise have to develop individually.
  • Training to boost efficiency;
  • Putting in place joint actions in risk management and audits – 1,000 of which have been organised between Member States since 2014 according to the Commission;
  • Fostering Union competitiveness, boosting innovation and facilitating the implementation of new economic models
