Claim the marriage allowance – don’t miss out!

HMRC are highlighting that the marriage allowance can be applied for online in a Press Release which estimates that two million couples are missing out. Taxpayers are being urged to apply directly and cut out the middleman.

In 2019/20, the marriage allowance allows those with income of £12,500 or less, to transfer up to £1,250 of their personal allowance to their husband, wife or civil partner – if their income is higher. Currently, claims can also be backdated four years so time is running out to backdate to 2015/16 and receive a refund of tax for that year. After 5 April 2020, couples will only be able to claim back to the 2016/17 year.
