eDay: Government Initiative
From 19 September Government, local authorities and State agencies will stop issuing and accepting cheques from businesses. Revenue, as a Government agency, will also be applying this initiative. The Institute has sought further details from Revenue on the implications of this initiative on the Pay and File regime.
eDay is an initiative under the National Payments Plan from the Central Bank to encourage business to migrate from cheque usage and to reduce costs and improve cash flow in the Irish economy.
Revenue has published a notice on their website outlining their position on this initiative. According to the notice, Revenue “…. is actively promoting the use of alternatives to cheque payments …” Also in the notice Revenue set out the alternative tax payment methods which can be used such as direct debits, single debit instructions, debit card and credit card. The Revenue notice is published on here.
We will continue to engage with Revenue on the impact of this eDay initiative; particularly the payment options for taxpayers who do not Pay and File electronically. We will report any updates in tax.point.
