Minister Paschal Donohoe addresses members in Chartered Accountants House
Over 150 members attended a lunchtime briefing from Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe TD in Chartered Accountants House in November, hosted by Institute President Feargal McCormack. During his speech, the Minister acknowledged the valuable skillset chartered accountants possess and challenged the profession to “be leaders of transparency, diversity and innovation”. On tax matters, the Minister said that the tax system is evolving to reflect the different way we now do business. Acknowledging that larger globalised and digital companies need a suitable tax system, the Minister said that some of the proposals being suggested internationally are “short-sighted and may cause difficulty in the longer term” and stated that he does not support measures that transform corporation tax from a tax on profits to a revenue based tax. On Brexit matters, the Minister said that the Irish economy must prepare for a very different economy once the UK leaves.
